Spend enough time in any category with a wide price range and the same theory surfaces, repeated with the confidence of folk wisdom: the expensive one is better-made. The logic feels airtight. Premium materials cost more. Skilled labor costs more. Therefore, a higher price signals better craft. It is a reasonable inference, and for certain products in certain contexts it holds up. The problem is that people apply it universally, as though price and quality were two ends of the same rope.
They are not even in the same room.
What Price Actually Measures
Price is the output of a negotiation between what something costs to produce and what the market will bear. That second variable is doing enormous work that most buyers never account for. A brand with loyal customers, aspirational positioning, and a flagship store on a street where rent is calculated by the square inch can charge more than a brand making an objectively better product out of a warehouse in an unglamorous zip code. Neither of these is a secret. It is just the architecture of how pricing works, and it means that premium price tags are partly, sometimes mostly, about the cost of being perceived as premium.
Marketing budgets, celebrity endorsements, influencer relationships, glossy packaging that gets thrown away the moment the box is opened: all of it runs through the price. The object in the box may be excellent, mediocre, or somewhere in between. The price does not specify which.
The Mid-Range Sweet Spot That Gets Ignored
In category after category, the genuinely well-made product tends to cluster in the middle of the price range, not at the top. This is especially visible in hand tools, kitchen knives, and audio equipment, categories where materials science and manufacturing precision are measurable and where obsessive communities have spent decades testing things the manufacturers would rather not publicize.
Take kitchen knives as a clear example. A Japanese gyuto in the 150 to 250 dollar range from a mid-size maker will, in most blind cutting tests, outperform a German knifecosting twice as much from a brand whose name has been printed on cookware for a hundred years. The German knife has heritage and name recognition, and those things cost money to maintain. The smaller Japanese maker put the money into steel hardness and edge geometry instead. The person using that knife every day for five years notices the difference in the first week. The person who bought the famous German brand because the price signaled quality may never know what they traded away.
Above a certain threshold in most product categories, incremental increases in price correspond to diminishing improvements in the actual craft. At some point, the curve flattens completely, and what continues to rise is prestige, not performance.
Why Craft Signals Are Hard to Read from the Outside
Part of the reason the price-equals-quality shortcut persists is that real craft signals are technical and require some effort to learn. The Rockwell hardness rating of steel, the thread count that actually matters versus the one printed large on a bedsheet package, the sole construction method that determines how long a pair of shoes holds up: these are not visible at a glance. A high price tag is visible at a glance. So is a heavy feel, a weighty heft, a thick box, a satisfying click. Manufacturers understand this and engineer the perception accordingly. Weight gets added to products where it has no functional value. Packaging gets more elaborate. The product itself may be unchanged.
Heft is one of the most reliably exploited proxies for quality. A heavier cast iron pan from a big-box house brand is not better than a lighter, more carefully seasoned one from a smaller foundry. But it feels more substantial in the hand, and that sensation does real work on the buyer’s confidence. The same principle runs through luggage, headphones, pens, and kitchen appliances. The weight is often a design choice aimed at a feeling, not a structural necessity.
Where the Myth Gets Actively Reinforced
Luxury brands have an obvious interest in maintaining the price-equals-quality association, but they are not the only ones reinforcing it. Retailers who stock a range of price points benefit when customers trade up. Review ecosystems that depend on affiliate revenue have a financial incentive to recommend higher-priced products, since the commission is larger. Even well-intentioned reviewers absorb the bias over time: it takes genuine effort to conclude that the 80 dollar option outperforms the 400 dollar one, because the conclusion runs against so much accumulated cultural expectation.
There is also a psychological self-protection mechanism at work for buyers who have already committed. A person who spent serious money on something has a strong motive to believe it was the right call. Acknowledging that a fraction of the price would have gotten the same result is an uncomfortable thought, and most people route around uncomfortable thoughts rather than examining them. This is not a character flaw. It is just how cognition works under conditions of sunk cost.
The Categories Where Price Does Track Quality
To be honest about this, the relationship is real in some domains. Materials with fixed costs make the link more reliable: a ring made from a heavier gauge of sterling silver genuinely costs more to produce than one made from a thinner gauge, and the price will reflect that. Raw timber, fine wool, certain ceramics, hand-blown glass: in these areas, the raw material itself imposes a floor, and above that floor the price does tend to correlate with care taken in construction.
The relationship also holds more reliably at the extreme low end. There is a price below which cutting corners is unavoidable. A ten-dollar chef’s knife will be made from steel that dulls fast and cannot hold an edge long enough to matter. A pair of shoes at fifteen dollars cannot be constructed from leather that lasts. At that end of the spectrum, price does carry real information about the physical limits of what can be put into the object.
The myth is not that price never tracks quality. The myth is the assumption that it always does, that the relationship continues linearly all the way up the range, and that the most expensive option is therefore the safest choice for someone who cares about quality. That version of the rule breaks down decisively once you are out of the basement and into the middle of the market.
How to Actually Read Craft
Reading craft requires learning the technical vocabulary of the category. This sounds like a lot of work, and the first time in a new category it is. But the vocabulary is finite and learnable. For knives, the key variables are steel type, hardness rating, and grind geometry. For wool clothing, yarn weight, fiber diameter, and weave structure. For audio equipment, frequency response measurements under controlled conditions rather than impressionistic descriptions of “warmth” or “presence.” Each category has its own set of numbers and construction details that reveal more than any price tag.
Obsessive communities exist for almost every product category worth caring about. Forums, subreddits, and specialty review sites where people have tested the same object over years and compared it against alternatives across the full price range. These communities are frequently ignored in favor of mainstream publications whose revenue model pushes them toward aspirational recommendations. But they tend to be where the genuinely useful information lives, because the contributors have no stake in what you buy and every stake in getting the answer right.
When the Expensive One Breaks First
The starkest illustration of the myth’s limits comes from durability failures. A modestly priced leather boot resoled by a cobbler for forty dollars after three years of daily wear has outperformed a boot that cost five times as much and delaminated in eighteen months because the uppers were genuine leather over a sole unit glued with an adhesive that degrades with moisture. The expensive boot performed better on aesthetics and worse on the thing that actually measures craft: whether the object holds together under real use.
These failures are not rare, and they follow a pattern. The premium tier of consumer goods is where aesthetic investment is highest and where the purchaser is least likely to scrutinize construction details, because they have already been convinced by the price that the scrutiny is unnecessary. That combination, high trust plus low technical inspection, is exactly the condition under which cutting corners on actual craft is easiest to get away with. The expensive one sometimes breaks first because the buyer already decided it wouldn’t.
